A brief overview of web design functional elements

Posted on 7 September 2022

Introduction

As visual elements are important for any website, functional elements are equally integral. They help the site to rank high on search engines. Moreover, these are the ones that make sure that users have a great experience on your website. So, along with visual elements, it is a must to consider them while designing a website.

Navigation

How you design the navigation protocol of your website is extremely important, especially from the UX point of view. Navigation allows your users to use the website depending on their purpose at the website. For instance; if someone is present for the first time at your website then it allows them to discover what your site has to offer. If someone is back again it will help them to start from where they left off. Thus, navigation is integral to improving the visitor’s overall experience.

User interactions

There are many ways with which users interact with your website depending on the device they use. Some may click while others may scroll or tap, point is, when there are various ways with which a user can interact with your website then you need to make sure that viewers smoothly interact with your website. Some of the ways with which you can guarantee the smooth interaction of your website include;

Don’t auto-play audio/video

● Don’t show pop-up

● Never underline the text unless it is clickable

  Mobile friendly design

Animations

There are plenty of sources available on the net from where you can have the inspiration of animations which you can use in your design to make it more interactive. They engage your site visitors instantly. However, if you are a new designer then we suggest you keep your design as simple as possible to avoid developing conflict later on.

Speed

Nobody likes to wait more than a few seconds for a page to load. You can’t keep your visitor on your site if the waiting period is too long. No matter how good or beautiful your site is it can’t do well or rank high on google if the speed is not high. The top site mostly compresses the size of the data on the website this way they shorten the loading time. So, make sure to do your research thoroughly.

Site structure

The structure of the website is a major contributor that affects both; what would be the user experience of your website and how your site rank on google ranking- meaning it affects the search engine optimization process. It should be able to help your users to be on track without getting lost. If site structure would be poor then users can lost easily while navigating and if they can get lost, crawlers can get too, which can affect your site ranking.

Note: Crawlers (bot) search through your website and determine its functionality.

Conclusion

As a designer, you must know how to maintain a balance between both visual elements and functional elements. If only you can grasp the skill of taking both sides by side in your design, you will be able to make a design that is both aesthetically pleasing and user-friendly.

A brief overview of web design visual elements

Posted on 5 September 2022

Introduction

When you get into website designing you learn about two main things that are UI and UX referring to the interface and usability respectively. The website or any other digital product you are going to design has the perfect blend of everything from aesthetics to usability, so using various elements to design the near-perfect version of the website is extremely important.

In this article, we are going to see various elements which draw up the final version of your website. But before that, we suggest you learn about website designing, so read a brief introduction to web designing, and you will have a better understanding of website designing.

Written content

Just assume you don’t have any knowledge of design and you open any website that doesn’t go hand in hand with the text written, how would you feel? Of course, you will feel confused. This is the UX point of view of your website. Point is, that the website you design should have a well-written design that fits perfectly with your design and the services you are offering. So, focus on text chunks that compliment your graphics and images.

Fonts

The second most important thing is font selection. Choosing a font that compliments your overall design is extremely important. Font should go well with the color scheme, images, graphics, and other things you used for your web design. Some web design tools even include various font pairings that can work for you. Other than that, there are tools like Canva font combinatory which can help you with the right font selection.

Colors

Selecting the color is the most important step of the website designing procedure. Many designers argue based on the psychology of color, but it is important to know that it could be wrong sometimes. So, you need to focus on the colors that compliment the design and tone of your website. Color defines much more than just the layout of a website. Though indirectly it gives the idea of your client’s company, so a website with a catchy color scheme has the potential to attract more customers.

Layout

The layout means selecting the right arrangement of everything that is being displayed on your web page. You may not know this but it has a dramatic effect on your overall design. So, you must consider the needs of your target audience while selecting the layout of your web design.

Shapes

The use of appropriate graphic elements can take your design to next level. It is the best way to create a connection between text and images, and help enhance the overall appearance of your website. They certainly direct your audience and help them in finding the relative information right away.

Videos

Using the appropriate video or videos can give your site an edge over other sites available in the market.  However, selecting them is a challenging task that you need to do quite carefully. You must select the video that is helpful with the information or message you want to convey to your audience.

Spacing

It is one of the most important factors to create a visually appealing website that is easy to navigate as well. Consistent spacing will help your users easily navigate your website. Appropriate whitespace use is important to create a website that perfectly balances everything including texts, images, icons, symbols, etc.

Images and icons

Last on our list are images and icons that are used to convey lots of pieces of information within seconds. However, the selection of appropriate images and icons is extremely important, even excessive use of them can disrupt the overall structure of your design. So, be careful with the selection of the images and icons for your design.

Brief introduction to web designing

Posted on 2 September 2022

Web Designing

By definition, web design is the procedure involving planning, creating, conceptualising, and laying out the final version of data online. It involves the usage of various means like statistical figures, pictures, icons, symbols, and many other things that make the final version of the web page.

Now, web designing is much more than just aesthetics. Designers need to work on multiple arenas at the same time to ensure that users will have a great experience while using the website. They need to make sure that the website design is in its best form without compromising the overall functionality of the design.

Web designing tools

Come to the point where you need to decide which tool you are going to use to design any particular website. Well, there are two ways to design a website; desktop apps and website builders. Your selection of the method greatly depends on several factors including team size, budget, and the kind of site you want to form.

Desktop apps

Designing on desktop apps has its flex as it allows designers to focus fully on the design while leaving all the technicalities to the development team. However, this process could be expensive and requires several resources and the expertise of various individuals. And, as it is a long process, it is definitely a bit time-consuming. The best way to avoid such issues is to use a website builder that requires much fewer technical problems.

Website builders

There are a variety of website builders available in the market that offer a variety of services. Some commonly used website builders are Webflow, Squarespace, PageCloud, and Wix. Apart from them, many others can provide you with the template options that you want to design a particular website. So, the point is you need to select the website builder carefully and determine which one works for you best. For example, WordPress is one of the most used website platforms but it is not suitable for you if you are a visual designer because of its limited customised options.

Types of website designs

When you search about types of websites styles many styles will come like fixed, static, fluid, etc. However, in the modern design world, there are only two styles that are used. As website builders are mostly used for creating an adaptive and responsive website design, we are going to see a brief explanation of these website designs.

Adaptive websites

Adaptive website designs use two or more versions of designs that are based on the customised size of the screen. They can be split into two main categories depending on the site’s preference for the displayed size.

Responsive website

The biggest difference between adaptive and responsive websites is they use a flexible grid that can change according to the size of the screens. Responsive websites use breakpoints to create a custom look at every screen size, but unlike adaptive websites that have specific breakpoints, responsive websites can change constantly.

This article explains just the basics of website designing, there is so much more than this. So, if you want to learn more about web designing stay with us. We will assure you to provide the useful information in plain wording, so you can get better and excel.

A set of responsibilities of a UX researcher

Posted on 31 August 2022

Introduction

Back again with the UX research. If you are here for the first time reading this article we suggest you read our article overview of UX research and the benefits of UX research (attach links to this article here) first, so you can get a better idea of what we are going to discuss in this article.

UX research is all about determining the users’ perspective on design and helping UX designers to build a user-friendly design. You should keep in mind one thing: UX designers and UX researchers can be the same person or can be different, so don’t get confused over it. Now, back to the topic, here are a few main responsibilities that a UX researcher should have.

Thorough research plan

A UX researcher’s first task as a researcher is to make sure that he is making a plan that directly relates to the target audience. For this, you need to go step by step to formulate a plan that sets clear goals to achieve by a certain UX design. Thus, as a researcher, it is your responsibility to come up with a well-coordinated plan which helps the designer go in the right direction during the process of design creation.

Assess users’ demands

The most basic purpose of UX design is to make a design that satisfies the user’s demands and helps him to find his desired thing over the website, app, or any other digital product. However, before designing comes the research which helps to get a clear image of users’ demands. This way UX designers can generate more user-friendly designs.

Formulate UX guide

Coming up with a full set of instructions on how users feel while using any digital product, what they expect while using it, and what they think should be changed are a few of those questions that need to be asked and answered in a set format. This can guide UX designers on how they can get better in their design skills by considering users’ perspectives on everything.

Targeted audience-oriented research

Before making a design designer must be able to know who would be his/her target audience, people of what age group would use the design, and what purpose design will fulfill. But, these questions can only be answered if a thorough UX research has done before creating a design. So as a UX researcher it is your responsibility to do a thorough research to answer these questions.

Actionable recommendations

As a UX researcher, you need to make sure that you are doing the work in the right direction, so you can come up with the recommendations that are possible. Attach the evidence that clearly states the practicality of the solution. This way the designer can easily have the data and inspiration he needs to generate a more user-friendly design.

 Implementing research strategy

Formulating a specific strategy and then implementing it is the most important responsibility of the UX researcher. This way you can come up with a plan that can actually help the UX designer.

Most of the time UX design agencies specifically hire UX researchers to come up with ways that can bring innovation to the UX design world. So, as a researcher, you need to come up with solutions that can help the designers with the usability of the design. It is safe to say that UX research is the core of UX design that determines the final version of the design.

Benefits of UX research

Posted on 29 August 2022

Introduction

If you have read our last article then you will have a brief idea about UX research and how it is important in the UX designing field. However, if this is your first time here then we suggest you read our last article first. It will take only a few minutes but you get a really good idea of what UX research is. Anyways, back to the topic, so today we are going to see some benefits of UX research in UX designing and how they are giving a whole new picture to UX designing in this web designing world.

Understanding users’ perspective

What do you think is the essence of UX design? You may already be aware of this, but still, as a quick reminder- UX designing is all about making user-friendly products. Thus, understanding user preferences is the key thing in designing a procedure. UX research can help you with this to a great extent. As a UX designer, you can do this kind of research on your own or you can work with some UX designer to get a better insight into users’ perspectives and thoughts before designing a certain design.

Improvement in ideas

As a designer, you need to work on your skill continually. There is no end to your learning. The more you do research- the more you will learn about things. And of course, learning new things leads you to design a better product. This means UX research could help you improve as a designer. It will open lots of possibilities that generate new ideas for your design.

Discover new things

You will definitely learn a lot of things while doing research. So, saying that doing UX research is the best way to take your designing skills to next level wouldn’t be wrong. From users’ point of view to designing perspective, you will learn numerous things by doing comprehensive research. So, again UX research could be the answer to all your UX designing queries.

Flaw fixing

UX research enables you to find the flaws that you need to fix and avoid repeating them in your future designs. It helps you to assess the usability of your design and gives you an idea of how you can elevate your design from a UX perspective.

Provides you an edge over competitors

When you have a better design compared to your competitors then, of course, people would prefer using your products over others. However, you have to mind that here we are talking about “better” in the context of users’ experience.

Understand user interaction

With proper UX research, you will have a better understanding of how the user interacts or connects with the design. For instance, with UX research you will have the idea of features that the user likes or prefers that will help you in creating a more engaging design.

Helpful in marketing

Last but not least, thorough UX research helps you in making a design that immediately clicks with users, and this thing can help you in promoting your product more compared to others. So, even for the marketing purpose of your design UX research is extremely important.

Conclusion

All things considered, you need to do thorough research to get a better understanding of users and their demands about products. This way not only you can grow in the field of UX designing, but you will also be able to distinguish the design based on little details that make the design good or bad.

An overview of UX research

Posted on 26 August 2022

Introduction

Hello! Back again with UX definition. We know that we have explained countless times in our blogs what UX is, but you don’t, right? Maybe it’s your first time here, so, here we go again.

UX designing involves the creation of digital products like websites, apps, or any other digital thing that are easy to use by the users. In short, making a product that can interact with people, means they can get connected with it real quick is what UX designing is.

UX research

However, you need to do thorough UX research as a designer to be able to make a product that perfectly falls under UX design protocols. Now, the question is what is UX research? Well, simply put UX research is all about gathering information and then employing all your knowledge in developing products that can resonate with the users.

Few UX research methods

Like other research methods, UX research is being done in 2 ways.

Quantitative research

Like every other statistical research UX quantitative research is all about studying graphs and numerical data about the users’ behaviors and preferences. The purpose of this research is to identify the numerical status of some questions. For instance, it gives the idea of how many people were able to find any particular link, or how many people clicked a certain button. So, before assessing the quality of design, knowing the numerical stats about the usability of a design holds extreme importance.

Qualitative research

This research is based on finding the answers to questions about the behavior of people which they show toward the design. This study focuses on how you as a designer can come up with a solution to deal with certain issues. This type of research could be done by observing your users, doing interviews, field studies, etc. This research is conducted to find the human side of the data. With quantitative research, you could find the data of any particular action, but with qualitative research, you understand that data.

Few user research methods

  • UX designers use various research methods based on their convenience and availability. We are not going to discuss all of them here except a few commonly used ones.
  • Card sorting: This method allows you to assess the navigation and structure of the design
  • Lexical interview: It allows you to observe the user in his/her natural state.
  • Expert reviews: UX designers analyse their digital products based on expert reviews.
  • Surveys: Gives you a better idea of how your product is perceived by the users.
  • Random testing: Helps you assess the effectiveness of the design.

Conclusion

We tried our best to convey everything you need to know about UX research. There are hell lots of benefits of UX research, which we are definitely going to discuss but not in this article. If you want to learn more about the UI/UX designing world then stay connected with us. We will try our best to help you learn and understand better about UX. You can be a UX designer and researcher at the same time, or you can work with a UX researcher separately. This solely depends on you.

A comparative study of wireframes, prototypes, and mockups

Posted on 24 August 2022

Introduction

As a designer, you must be aware of how these three are important in the UI/UX designing world. They let the designer check the suitability and usability of the design at every stage of the designing process. This way designer could assess the efficiency of his product for the target audience. They can navigate the designing process after assessing the efficiency of their product. Especially, in UX designing usability testing at an early stage of wireframe to the completing stages of the prototype holds extreme importance in defining the shape of the product in a way that could provide a valuable experience to its users.

If we have to use a metaphor then we describe the relation of wireframe, prototype, and mockup as the car where the wireframe is the car’ structure, the prototype is the engine while the mockup is the outer body of the car. Just as everything is well-coordinated with each other in a car structure to provide a beautiful and efficient car. Similarly, well-coordinated wireframe, prototype, and mockup provide the beautiful final product.

Without any further explanations, let’s just get straight into learning all about these three pillars of designing.

Wireframes

The plain definition of a wireframe in the designing world is a low-fidelity representation of an actual product. However, there is no need to remember such technical terms. Remember wireframes as the raw version or basic sketch that you may have made while making the presentation for your school project. Similarly, wireframes are the layout that a designer made to gather his/her thoughts and present them in a replica of the actual product. It is great to generate cohesion and flow in design.

Prototypes

After the wireframe, the second stage that carries extreme importance in UX designing is prototyping, which is the replica or working model of the actual product, app, or website. This helps the designer assesses the usability of the product. How do people use the product, how do they move from one function to another, what’s their level of ease, are they finding anything confusing, are the features, drawings, and buttons, are all relevant and fill their purpose, all these questions and many more are answered at this stage.

Mockup

Mockup is the high-fidelity representation of the final product. It explains the graphic side of the product. Though it carries more importance in UI designing, it explains to the designer how users will interpret the brand image through its visuals. It is the stage where designers have to satisfy all the problems that would have arisen at the wireframe and prototype stage.

Conclusion

After learning these brief definitions of wireframe, prototype, and mockup, we hope you would be able to distinguish their functionality of them. Many properties of these stages actually relate to each other. Although it is not some written rule that you need to undergo all these stages to form a design, if you learn about users’ experiences at every stage of your design then definitely you would be able to create a product that interacts with the target right away. Moreover, you will learn a lot. So, it is a kind of win-win situation for you.

Some tips to develop effective UX design

Posted on 22 August 2022

Introduction

UI and UX are like lock and key, which means they are integral and incomplete without one another. You need to have the design of your product that clicks with your target audience right away. Whether your product is a mobile app, website, or any other platform, UX is the key thing that you need to focus on. Despite its importance, most of the time UX designers fail to carry the design the way it should.

Here we are going to see some tips which will be useful for you as a UX designer.

Change is not better all the time

As a designer, you naturally would have wanted to try new things, but to tell you the truth, change is not always better. Before you think of changing anything, think twice about why the current design is well perceived by the users. Sometimes, the intention of having something new that is unique compared to others leads you to a major disaster. So, we suggest you consider everything carefully before considering changing any design.

Simple and responsive

There is no denying the fact that simple design can be more responsive and effective in terms of connecting with the audience. One of the major problems that come with UX designing is that designer makes things too complicated for their good. Instead of reinventing everything, it is better to keep the design simple.

Defining the purpose

Relative to the above point, it would be great if the designer defines the purpose of the page in a clear layout. This way he would be able to make the product that people would find more responsive. To keep the design simple, designers should focus on these points.

• Each page should convey its purpose.

• Every heading, subheading or button used clearly conveys its message.

• Additional information should be avoided.

Understanding users’ demands

Well, it is not something new. It is the first thing that a designer learns in UX designing. However, still most of the time this is neglected by the designers while trying to make their design more appealing. As we have already mentioned, don’t try too much because this “too much” can turn off the users’ interest. So, gather feedback on your design or study the response of similar designs if present to learn more about the users’ preferences, perceptions, and needs.

Maintain fluidity of a design

What we mean by fluidity is you need to make sure that you are adopting the right approach to stand out important information more compared to others. The color scheme should be appropriate for the design. This helps user engagement with your product.

Conclusion

Long story short, you need to make a design that speaks for itself. This is possible only if you think and think twice before adopting anything new. We hope these tips would be of any help to you. If you want to be updated with the UI/UX designing world then stay in touch with us.

Few pointers for you to create an exceptional portfolio

Posted on 19 August 2022

Introduction

The irony is it is difficult to land a job without a great portfolio, and it is impossible to create a great portfolio without having jobs first. This is a true example of the chicken and egg problem. It may seem like a problem that seems impossible to resolve, but don’t be such a pessimist. This is not the end of the world. Fortunately, we live in a world full of possibilities, so even if you don’t have any jobs you can still build a great portfolio.
Very few universities are here to provide you with a degree in UX designing, so this industry can only judge based on your abilities. Use this drawback in your favor. We are here to give you a few ideas with which you can create a great portfolio. Yes, we know that you would want to learn these ideas ASAP, and won’t want to read a long boring article. That’s why we would try to be as brief as possible.

So, let’s just get straight into it;

Projects to be included

1. If we talk about the projects that could get you your first job then they are mostly of three types.

● One- unsolicited redesigns

2. Unsolicited redesigns are not accepted well in this industry, but still, there are many cases in which we have seen where these designs helped designers land their dream job. Here is a quick definition of unsolicited design- designs that you recreate from some existing website or app.

Note: when designing unsolicited redesign, not just focus on aesthetics, but focus on the solution of business problems as well.

● Two- non-profit projects

3. Voluntary projects include the projects you do for free. It is great to build experience and add something to your portfolio. However, you need to work on the project the same way as you would have while doing your best professional work.

●Three- apps or designs you build yourself (side projects)

4. Despite the great risk adding side projects to your portfolio is a bold move. However, we suggest you consider the risk factor before putting a link to your project in your portfolio because the employer will assess your skill set based on the project you do yourself. So, don’t ever mention your side project if it is poor or mediocre.

Layout of portfolio

Now, even if you have completed several projects, but don’t know how to present them compellingly then you can’t convince the employer to hire you. So, present something to an employer on which he considers you worthy of spending his money. As UX designing is all about understanding, you need to consider your employer in the place of users before creating your portfolio because they are humans too, so of course, they will remember your portfolio presented as a story more compared to Pandora’s box of images and information about your designs. So, create a beautiful and interesting story to enhance your chances of acceptance.

Things to exclude from a portfolio

If you are one of those people who are just getting into the UI/UX designing world and don’t have enough projects to include in your portfolio then this part is solely for you.

First of all, don’t even consider including the school projects. No matter how good they are but still they lack the professionalism that you need in the professional designing world. Secondly, don’t include anything in your portfolio that is not related to the design. Third, don’t include the projects that ended poorly, or the projects for which you didn’t get paid. Last but most important is don’t include the project with which you are not comfortable.  We mean we all go through different phases of life where we do things that we don’t want to but we have, to keep going. Well, if there is that kind of project you have done then don’t include it in your portfolio.

So, these are a few things from our side to help you create an exceptional portfolio. We hope this article helped you while creating your portfolio. For more informative content about UX/UI designing stay with us. We will try our best to help you in your design ventures.

Posted on 17 August 2022

Introduction

As a (UI/UX designer)designer, you must be aware of how frustrating it is to convey your ideas and design to people who are not aware of the design. Well, this is the skill that you must have to be a good designer in every possible way. This is your task to make the design interactive that can relate to every user. There are a few things that you can adopt to make such a design. So, without further ado let’s get straight into the things that a UI/UX designer must know.

10 basics that a UI/UX designer must know

10 basics that a UI/UX designer must know

  1. Legibility– This is one of those few things that especially UI designers neglect most of the time. The quality of              content doesn’t matter at all if it is not readable. So, make sure that the text on your design must be legible.
  2. Patterns– As a designer, you should be careful with the patterns you are going to use. Especially, do proper                    research before selecting the pattern to make it mobile responsive.
  3. Hover state animation– As a designer, you must know for how long the animation should hover. It should be in the         range of 300 to 400 milliseconds.
  4. Visual weight– You need to be careful with the visual weight of your users. Any data that does not contain any              information, but catches the eye is considered to be increasing the visual weight.
  5. Colors– As a designer, you must choose the colors carefully because certain colors may seem good but they clash       because of their saturation and luminosity.

6.  Loading time– Most of the time we don’t consider the things that are affecting the loading time of our website which users find unpleasant. So, while designing it is important that you are aware of the things that could affect the loading time.

7.  Text alignment– You need to be careful with the alignment of text. For instance, only 3 lines of text consider it aligning in the center.

8.  Number of characters– The appropriate number of characters per line for body text should be 50-70. No more or no less.

9.  Grid system– Select the grid system carefully. Use strict grid systems only for websites that don’t require to display of any kind of information.

10.  Mobile screen size– Appropriate size of a mobile screen is 375pt for an iPhone screen while 360pt for a mobile screen.

Conclusion
